How Much Does AI Consulting Cost in Australia?

    Jul 31, 2026·5 min read

Ask three consultancies what AI consulting costs in Australia and you will get three answers, none of them a number. This article gives you the numbers: what hourly rates actually look like, what the big firms charge, what drives project cost, and how to avoid paying enterprise prices for small business problems.

    The short answer

AI consulting in Australia typically runs from around $150 to $500+ per hour excl. GST. Small automation projects for an SME usually land somewhere between a few thousand and twenty thousand dollars all-in. Enterprise strategy engagements from the big consultancies start around $30,000 to $50,000, often before anything is built. Where you fall in that range depends far more on who you hire and how the engagement is structured than on the technology itself.

    Hourly rates across the market

At the bottom of the range, offshore contractors and generalist developers charge $150 an hour or less. They can be excellent value for well-specified build work, but you carry the risk of deciding what to build. At the top, specialist AI practices and the consulting arms of large firms charge $400 to $500+ an hour, and the meter often runs through discovery workshops before any building starts.

The middle of the market, roughly $250 to $350 an hour, is where most experienced independent consultancies sit. At that rate you should expect someone who both advises and builds: works out what is worth automating, then ships it.

    The enterprise strategy deck problem

The big firms sell AI engagements the way they sell everything: a discovery phase, a strategy phase, a roadmap, then, months later, an implementation program. For a large enterprise coordinating thousands of staff, that structure can make sense. For a 15-person business it means spending $30,000 to $50,000 on a document that describes what you might build, and nothing yet exists that saves anyone an hour.

The failure is not the quality of the analysis. It is the mismatch of scale. A small business does not need a transformation roadmap. It needs its invoices processed, its quotes drafted and its systems talking to each other, and it needs to see that working within weeks.

    What actually drives project cost

Four things move the number more than anything else:

    • Number of systems involved. Connecting two systems is a small job. Connecting five, with edge cases in each, is not.
    • How clean the process is. A process with clear rules automates cheaply. One that lives in a long-serving employee's head needs mapping first.
    • Data quality. If the source data is inconsistent, budget for cleanup before automation.
    • Ongoing costs. Hosting, software subscriptions and AI model usage are billed by those providers and sit outside consulting fees. A straight consultant sets them out before you commit.

    How we price it

We work at an agreed hourly rate that depends on the scope and nature of the engagement. Before any work starts, the engagement is scoped and capped in writing: what will be built, how many hours it can take at most, and therefore the maximum you can pay, with the figure given at the free consultation. The scoping itself, and the consultation before it, cost nothing, so the capped figure is in front of you before you have spent a dollar. Most first engagements come in at days of work rather than months, because the first project is deliberately small enough to prove its value fast.

A capped hourly engagement gives you the transparency of hourly billing without its main risk, the open-ended invoice. You see the rate, you see the ceiling, and you keep everything that gets built. One more policy worth knowing: pay for a standalone consulting engagement, decide to build the project with us, and the consulting fee is waived, so the advice costs nothing if you go ahead. Keeping the cost down

Three habits keep AI consulting affordable, whoever you hire. Start with one process, not a program: a single well-chosen automation pays for the next one. Use the software you already own where you can: a surprising amount can be built on Microsoft 365, Xero and the CRM you already pay for. And insist on a scope in writing before work starts: most blown budgets were never scoped, just started.

Questions to ask before you sign

Ask any consultant these five: What would you automate first in my business, and why? What is the cap on this engagement? Who owns what you build? Where is my data processed? What are the ongoing costs after you leave? A consultant worth hiring answers all five plainly and in writing. If the answers arrive wrapped in a proposal for a discovery phase, you already have your answer about how the engagement will run.

If you want those answers for your own business, get in touch. The first conversation is free and the numbers stay in plain sight.
